How the Environmental Score Is Calculated

The overall score is a weighted average across six indicators. Where all six values are available, Nomadino calculates: Environmental score = PM2.5 exposure × 0.25 + tap water safety × 0.20 + sanitation × 0.20 + waste management × 0.15 + noise pollution × 0.12 + UV radiation × 0.08.

  • Fine particulate matter exposure (PM2.5): 25%
  • Tap water safety: 20%
  • Sanitation: 20%
  • Waste management: 15%
  • Noise pollution: 12%
  • UV radiation: 8%

PM2.5, tap water and sanitation receive the highest weights because they have especially direct and broad health effects. Waste management also affects hygiene, open burning, soil and water pollution, but more indirectly. Noise remains important, but is less consistently measured worldwide. UV radiation is included with a lower weight because personal protection and behaviour matter more.
