How the Housing and Utilities Score Is Calculated

The overall score is a weighted average across five indicators. Nomadino calculates: housing and utilities score = city rent per square metre × 0.35 + rural rent per square metre × 0.20 + electricity cost × 0.20 + heating and gas × 0.15 + water and sewage × 0.10.

  • City rent per square metre: 35%
  • Rural rent per square metre: 20%
  • Electricity cost: 20%
  • Heating and gas: 15%
  • Water and sewage: 10%

Nomadino uses normalized indicator scores on a 0 to 100 scale, where higher means lower recurring housing and household costs. Rent is the largest and most persistent cost block, so city and rural rent together make up 55% of the score. City rent receives the higher weight because it is usually more relevant for arrival, work, expats and digital nomads than rural rent.

Electricity remains strongly weighted at 20% because it is a recurring household bill and varies widely between countries. Heating and gas count for 15% because they matter strongly in cold countries but less in warm countries. Water and sewage remain included at 10% so basic utility costs are visible without dominating rent or energy prices. If an indicator is removed with the checkbox, Nomadino divides by the sum of the remaining weights, preserving the relative importance of the active indicators.
