How the Natural Hazards Score Is Calculated
The overall score is a weighted average across eight indicators. Nomadino calculates: natural hazards score = flood risk × 0.20 + storm risk × 0.18 + earthquake risk × 0.16 + drought risk × 0.14 + wildfire risk × 0.10 + landslide risk × 0.08 + tsunami risk × 0.07 + volcano risk × 0.07.
- Flood risk: 20%
- Storm risk: 18%
- Earthquake risk: 16%
- Drought risk: 14%
- Wildfire risk: 10%
- Landslide risk: 8%
- Tsunami risk: 7%
- Volcano risk: 7%
Nomadino uses the normalized indicator score where higher means safer. High raw risk values are converted into lower scores first. Floods and storms receive the highest weights because they affect many countries, occur regularly and strongly influence infrastructure, housing, mobility and insurance costs. Earthquakes are also weighted strongly because they may be less frequent, but can be exceptionally destructive when they occur. Drought is weighted clearly because it affects water, agriculture, heat exposure, power supply and long-term quality of life. Wildfire and landslide risk remain relevant, but are more geographically limited. Tsunami and volcano risk remain included, but receive lower weights because they are decisive mainly in specific coastal or volcanic zones.
