How the Religion & Worldviews Score Is Calculated

The overall score is a weighted average across four indicators: religious freedom × 0.35 + religious influence in public life × 0.30 + secularisation score × 0.20 + religious diversity × 0.15.

  • Religious freedom: 35%
  • Secularisation score: 20%
  • Religious diversity: 15%
  • Religious influence in public life: 30%

This board does not rate a religion as such. It compares how freely people with different religious, worldview or non-religious convictions can live everyday life without state or social coercion.

Religious freedom receives the highest weight because it directly describes protection for belief, non-belief, conversion, criticism and practice. Religious influence in public life is also weighted strongly because privilege, religion-shaped legal norms or social coercion can shape everyday life even where formal rights exist.

Secularisation is treated as its own openness dimension: it means free non-affiliation and practical separation of state and religion, not hostility toward religion. Religious diversity remains included but receives a lower weight because a mixed population structure alone does not guarantee freedom.

If an indicator is disabled with the checkbox, Nomadino divides by the sum of the remaining weights.
