🚲Cycling Infrastructure

Composite score 0–100 measuring the quality and extent of cycling infrastructure — combining the Copenhagenize Bicycle Friendly Cities Index, km of protected cycling lanes per 100,000 residents, and national cycling policy quality (EU Cycling Strategy, national cycling master plans). Netherlands is the global benchmark: Amsterdam has over 800km of dedicated lanes, cycling accounts for 27% of all trips, and the network is fully separated from motor traffic. Denmark and Germany also score extremely highly. The Nordic countries combine strong cycling culture with Nordic winter cycling infrastructure. Outside Europe, Japan scores surprisingly well (wide sidewalk cycling tolerance, dedicated lanes in major cities), as does Singapore (planned 700km network by 2030) and Taiwan. Most of the developing world scores 5–20 — informal cycling exists but on unprotected roads alongside motor traffic. For nomads considering car-free urban life, cycling infrastructure is increasingly decisive.
