Transit Coverage

Percentage of the population living within 500 metres of a public transport stop — bus, tram, metro, or rail (UITP, GTFS data, World Resources Institute). This is the most fundamental transit indicator: a network that exists but is unreachable by most residents is of limited value. Near-complete coverage (>90%): Singapore, Netherlands, Japan, Hong Kong, Switzerland — where urban planning and transit investment have been deeply intertwined for decades. High coverage (75–90%): Western Europe broadly, South Korea, Taiwan, Canada's major cities. Moderate (50–75%): Latin American capitals, Eastern Europe, Turkey, urban China. Low coverage (<40%): Most of Sub-Saharan Africa, rural-dominated Pacific nations, small island states. Note: national averages mask enormous urban/rural divides. Tokyo has ~100% coverage within the metropolitan area; rural Japan is much lower. For digital nomads concentrated in cities, urban coverage is most relevant.
