Freedom of Political Expression

V-Dem Freedom of Expression and Alternative Sources of Information Index 2024, 0?100. Measures how free ordinary citizens are to discuss political matters, criticise the government, and access independent information ? online and offline. A score near 100 means people face no risk of retaliation for expressing political views; scores near 0 mean open criticism of the government risks imprisonment, violence, or worse. The index captures media pluralism, internet freedom, and the right of individuals to voice dissent without surveillance or retribution. For digital nomads and long-term residents: in low-scoring countries, a social media post, a blog entry, or even a private conversation can lead to legal trouble ? even for foreigners.
