How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value is the share of the population living in urban areas. National definitions of urban and rural are harmonized through international series.

Public source families are UN World Urbanization Prospects, World Bank development data, national statistical offices and maintained replacements for small or dependent territories.

The rating is derived directly from the raw value: 15% or less receives 0 points, while 100% receives 100 points. Values in between are scaled linearly.

A higher urbanization rate therefore improves the ranking. The indicator does not measure city quality; transport, rents, green space, safety and infrastructure are rated by other indicators.
