How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value is import months. It shows how many months of goods-and-services imports a country could theoretically cover with its official reserve assets. Higher raw values are better; Nomadino converts the value separately into points from 0 to 100.

The primary source is World Bank indicator FI.RES.TOTL.MO for total reserves in months of imports. For directly covered countries, Nomadino uses the latest non-empty World Bank value.

Where this direct series is missing, the raw value is reconstructed from two other World Bank series: total reserve assets in US dollars divided by monthly imports of goods and services in US dollars. The formula is: reserves / (annual imports / 12).

For countries and territories without separate World Bank coverage, Nomadino uses maintained replacement values. They are checked against World Bank data, the IMF International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity dataset, administering states and regional comparators, and are marked in the source field.

The rating rises monotonically with the visible import-month value: below 1 month is very weak, around 3 months is a minimum buffer, 6 to 12 months is solid, and 18 to 24 months is very strong. Above very high reserve coverage, additional months add only a few extra points.

Under World Bank and IMF methodology, official reserves include external assets, including monetary gold, that are readily available and controlled by the monetary authority. They support balance-of-payments needs, exchange-market intervention and confidence in external solvency.

For monetary unions, reserve-currency countries and very open financial centres, national reserve coverage can look structurally different from smaller countries with their own currency. Nomadino does not mix those effects into the raw value; this indicator deliberately rates only the directly measurable import coverage from official reserves.

This indicator measures external liquidity, not prosperity or stability as a whole. Current account balance, inflation, public debt, growth, central-bank independence, exchange-rate regime and economic resilience remain separate or neighbouring indicators.
