Tax Revenue (% of GDP)

Raw value is tax revenue as percent of GDP, primarily from World Bank WDI GC.TAX.TOTL.GD.ZS. Nomadino converts the visible percent value into a balanced macroeconomic rating: extremely low tax revenue can indicate weak fiscal capacity, while very high tax revenue can constrain private-sector room.

How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value is tax revenue as a percentage of gross domestic product. Nomadino primarily uses the latest non-empty value from World Bank indicator GC.TAX.TOTL.GD.ZS. The value remains visible as a concrete percentage; the rating is calculated separately from it.

The World Bank series measures tax revenue relative to economic output and is based on internationally harmonised government-finance statistics. Because fiscal perimeters can differ by country, IMF, OECD and UNU-WIDER sources are used as plausibility context.

The rating deliberately does not follow a simple lower-is-better rule. Very low tax ratios can point to weak fiscal capacity, a large informal sector or heavy reliance on non-tax state revenue. Very high tax ratios can constrain private-sector room and location attractiveness.

The strongest rating range is roughly 20% to 28% of GDP. Below that range, the rating rises as the revenue base becomes more viable; above it, the rating declines step by step because the tax ratio becomes increasingly heavy relative to economic output.

For countries and territories without a separate World Bank series, Nomadino uses maintained replacement values from the existing tax and macroeconomic data base, administering states and regional comparators. These values are marked as replacements in the source rows.

This indicator measures the economy-wide tax ratio, not the burden on a specific person. Top income-tax rates, VAT, social contributions, capital-gains tax, dividend tax, inheritance tax and filing complexity remain separate or neighbouring indicators.
