How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value is a Nomadino point value from 0 to 100. 100 means very strong patient safety in hospitals: infections are monitored and prevented, resistant pathogens are limited, avoidable harm is systematically recorded, and hospitals have enough staff, equipment and oversight for safe care. 0 means patient safety is effectively absent or extremely unreliable. The score equals the raw value.

This is not an official percentage rate. There is no complete annually comparable global country series that jointly measures hospital infections, infection prevention, antimicrobial resistance, avoidable patient harm, hospital oversight and crisis resilience. Nomadino therefore uses a composite safety value.

The calculation combines six components: 30% control of healthcare-associated infections and resistant pathogens, 20% infection prevention and hygiene, 20% general patient-safety systems, 15% hospital capacity and overload risk, 10% transparency, oversight and administration, and 5% crisis, infrastructure and territory checks.

The infection block assesses whether a health system can limit infections in facilities and resistant pathogens in everyday care. Because direct infection rates are globally incomplete and difficult to compare due to different reporting quality, Nomadino combines regional surveillance sources with proxy signals from infectious-disease risk, care quality, medicine access, emergency care, life expectancy, infant mortality, administration and legal enforcement.

Infection prevention and hygiene assess national and practical conditions for safe hospitals: infection prevention programmes, hand hygiene, isolation capacity, reprocessing, sterilisation, protective equipment, antimicrobial stewardship, outbreak detection and implementation in facilities. A country is not rated highly from low reported infections alone where reporting, oversight or hygiene conditions are weak.

General patient safety includes safety culture, reporting systems, medication safety, surgical safety, maternity safety, avoidable harm and the ability to learn from errors. Nomadino combines care quality, emergency care, universal health coverage, medicine access, life expectancy, infant mortality, administration and rule of law.

The capacity block assesses doctor density, hospital beds, emergency care, medicine access, general care and economic resilience. Very constrained or overloaded systems receive deductions because overload makes infection prevention, nursing quality, medication safety and error prevention harder.

Transparency and oversight prevent a false reward for missing data: countries with weak administration, poor legal enforcement or little independent quality control cannot rank highly from low reported infection numbers alone. War, state collapse, severe political instability, sanctions or effectively collapsed health care can limit maximum values. Small or dependent territories receive maintained replacement values derived from administering state, local care, hospital access, island or remote context and plausible comparator countries.
