How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value shows mandatory social-security contributions on ordinary employment income as a percent of gross wage. It combines employee and employer contributions where they are levied directly on wages. Lower percentages receive higher scores.

The base model is a single tax-resident worker without children in regular dependent employment. Included are mandatory contributions for pensions, health insurance, long-term care, unemployment, disability, maternity, accident insurance and wage-guarantee schemes where they operate as social insurance or broadly mandatory payroll levies.

To avoid distorting contribution ceilings, Nomadino uses three income points: 67%, 100% and 167% of a country-typical average-wage anchor. They are weighted 25%, 50% and 25%. Where only a general public contribution rate is reliable, it is placed into the same logic as a maintained replacement value.

Excluded are personal income tax, church tax, VAT, capital taxes, voluntary private insurance, employer fringe benefits and special regimes for self-employed people or particular occupations. Variable accident or sector rates use a normal office or average-risk setting where no unified rate exists.

OECD Taxing Wages is the main comparison frame for OECD countries because it separates employee and employer contributions from income tax and transfers. For other countries, Nomadino uses PwC country profiles, ISSA country profiles, MISSOC for Europe, ILO social-protection data and national social-security or tax authorities.

Countries with 0% should not automatically be read as having strong social protection. The value only means that the standard model has no or hardly any mandatory wage-based social contributions. Health care, pensions, unemployment protection and broader social security are assessed in separate health, social and stability indicators.

The score is calculated directly and proportionally from the visible percentage: 0% receives 100 points, while 65% or more receives 5 points. Between those anchors the score declines linearly and is rounded to whole points. This prevents a lower raw value from receiving a worse score than a higher raw value.
