Obesity Rate

Age-standardized adult obesity prevalence in percent: share of adults aged 18+ with BMI >= 30 kg/m2, both sexes combined. Primary source is WHO Global Health Observatory indicator NCD_BMI_30A. Lower raw value means lower obesity prevalence; score equals 100 - (raw value / 80) * 99, bounded to 1..99.

How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value is the age-standardized adult obesity prevalence in percent. It measures the share of adults aged 18+ with a body mass index of at least 30 kg/m², both sexes combined. Lower is better.

The primary source is WHO indicator NCD_BMI_30A from the World Health Organization data portal. Nomadino uses the latest available annual value for both sexes and adults aged 18+. In this update the WHO API rows are dated May 27th, 2026 and include values through 2024.

The values are age-standardized. This makes countries more comparable because differences in age structure have less influence on the ranking. The crude population estimate is therefore not mixed into the raw value.

The rating is calculated directly from the percentage: rating = 100 - (raw value / 80) * 99, rounded to whole points and bounded to 1-99. 80% obesity is the upper anchor for the minimum rating. A country with 10% obesity receives roughly 88 points; a country with 40% receives roughly 51 points.

For countries and territories without a separate WHO series, Nomadino uses maintained replacement values. These are derived from administering state, regional comparators, available WHO values, NCD-RisC methodology and previous Nomadino values. Replacement values remain visible as percentages and use the same rating formula.

This indicator measures only country-level obesity prevalence. It does not automatically rate diet quality, exercise, diabetes, cardiovascular risk, childhood obesity, undernutrition or individual health risk. These aspects must not dilute the raw-value definition.
