Real Wage Growth Rate (%)

Raw value is the latest usable annual real wage growth rate in percent, based on comparable wage observations deflated by consumer-price inflation. Higher real wage growth receives a higher score.

How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value is annual real wage growth in percent. Real means nominal wage increases are adjusted for consumer-price inflation. A positive value means labour income rises after price increases; a negative value means wage purchasing power falls.

The direct data anchor is ILOSTAT SDG 8.5.1, average hourly earnings of employees in local currency. Nomadino uses only the total value across sex and skill groups so the raw value is not driven by a subgroup.

Nomadino calculates the annualised change between two comparable wage years from the same ILOSTAT source. It then deflates this nominal change with World Bank indicator FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG for consumer-price inflation. In simplified form: real wage growth = ((1 + nominal wage growth) / (1 + consumer-price inflation) - 1) times 100.

If ILOSTAT already contains a newer wage year but the matching World Bank inflation value is not yet available, Nomadino uses the latest wage-year pair with complete inflation coverage. This keeps the raw value inflation-adjusted and internationally comparable instead of mixing a current nominal value with a missing price anchor.

For countries and territories without a usable ILOSTAT/inflation pair, Nomadino uses maintained replacement values. They are checked against national wage series, the Eurostat Labour Cost Index wage and salary component, OECD wage series, administering states, regional comparators and existing Nomadino wage values. Replacements give a realistic placement but are not treated as official point measurements.

This indicator does not measure wage level. A low-wage country can have strong short-term real wage growth, while a high-wage country can stagnate in real terms under inflation. Average net salary, purchasing-power index, unemployment rate and salary-to-rent ratio therefore remain separate indicators.

The score rises monotonically with the visible percentage. Strong real wage losses sit near the bottom, values around 0% sit around the middle, 1% to 3% real growth is good, 4% to 5% is strong, and exceptionally high real gains reach the upper end of the scale.
