Protected Land Area (%)

This ranking compares terrestrial protected areas as a share of land area. The raw value is shown in percent. Higher shares receive a higher rating up to a 30 percent target; values above that are capped so protected-area share does not dominate the ranking by itself.

How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value shows terrestrial protected areas as a percentage of total land area. It covers protected land, not marine protected areas and not general nature quality.

The main public data anchor is World Bank series ER.LND.PTLD.ZS. Methodologically it is based on international protected-area data that can also be checked through WDPA and Protected Planet.

Nomadino uses the latest non-empty World Bank value for each country. Countries and territories without their own series may use maintained replacement values derived from existing Nomadino values, administering state, local protected-area context and regional comparators.

The rating increases linearly up to 30 percent protected land area. 30 percent or more receives 100 points, 15 percent receives about 50 points and 0 percent receives 0 points.

This cap is deliberate: very high protected-area shares are positive, but should not dominate the ranking by themselves. Effective management, accessibility and biodiversity richness are not measured directly here.
