This ranking compares typical city rents per square metre across countries and territories. It measures ongoing rent pressure in major urban locations, not purchase prices, utilities or holiday rentals. Lower square-metre rents receive a higher rating.

How the Raw Value Is Calculated

The raw value is the estimated monthly city rent in US dollars per square metre. It is intended to represent a normal long-term city apartment, not a luxury unit, short-term rental or holiday accommodation.

Where direct country values are available, Nomadino uses a rent basket made of 70% one-bedroom apartment in the city centre with 45 square metres and 30% three-bedroom apartment in the city centre with 90 square metres. The formula is: 0.7 times monthly rent of the one-bedroom apartment divided by 45 plus 0.3 times monthly rent of the three-bedroom apartment divided by 90.

For countries and territories without reliable direct coverage, Nomadino uses maintained replacement values. These start from the existing Nomadino rent per square metre and are calibrated with country-specific urban-premium factors. The values are checked against Numbeo, Global Property Guide, OECD and Eurostat housing sources, national statistical sources and World Bank exchange rates.

Electricity, heating, water, internet, broker fees, deposits, purchase prices, rental yields, hotels, holiday rentals and rural or non-central rents are not included. Those topics remain separate indicators or are used only as plausibility checks.

The rating is rescaled from all visible raw values. The lowest city-rent value receives 100 points, and the highest value receives 1 point. Between them, Nomadino uses a logarithmic cost scale because rents are strongly skewed: very cheap and mid-range countries remain clearly differentiated, while extreme top rents do not distort the whole scale.
